With apologies to Emma Lazarus, “The New Colossus”
Adorned in a becoming shade of green
As silently on Bedlow’s does she stand
That gentle girl of Jersey fame is grand
But nowadays, her liberty’s unseen
“More than a statue of copper and steel”
To quote the Frenchman who demands her back
He posits what she stands for we now lack
A fear that I’m concerned is all too real
Poor Emma’s words are warped in many ways
“The tempest-tost were Europeans” blares
The men who wants reform to “halcyon” days
When Jew and Polack masses huddled scared
She doesn’t stand for us and yet she stays
Perhaps we should erect for her a chair
