It’s been over a year since the release of The Weeknd’s last album, Beauty Behind the Madness. The record proved to be a massive success—spawning the hits “Often,” “The Hills,” and “Can’t Feel My Face.” With BBTM being Abel’s first number one album, people have been clamoring for more content ever since.

Well, the wait is over.

The Weeknd recently resurfaced with “Starboy.” With the help of electronic music duo Daft Punk, the song represents the next phase of The Weeknd’s superstardom. The beginning of the music video displays The Weeknd ziptied to a chair across the table from a masked figure. He is promptly suffocated to death by the masked figure who reveals himself to be none other than The Weeknd.

However, this Weeknd is different. His signature dreads are no more, and an even bigger attitude is ever present. The 26-year-old Canadian hasn’t been known to be entirely humble, and “Tell Your Friends” is a prime example. Starboy’s intent to piss everybody off is made clear in the first line: “I’m tryna put you in the worst mood.”

Abel spends the remainder of the song bragging about his wealth—specifically his collection of cars—and welcoming his superstar status while disregarding his past accomplishments that made him one.

A week after “Starboy,” The Weeknd dropped “False Alarm” as a dance punk follow-up single. The false alarm, in this case, is a woman whose romantic feelings are only a facade for her materialistic desires.

The atypically high-tempo Weeknd track is supported by a music video that looks like a real-life version of Payday: The Heist. The two-time Grammy winner teams up with a group of men to rob a bank and is successful, only to witness his team members die during the escape. To make matters worse, his female hostage takes the money and leaves him to commit suicide to avoid getting arrested. Intense.

The Weeknd’s album—also titled Starboy—is set to drop November 25th. Both songs represent a farewell to the BBTM and prior era of The Weeknd. “Starboy” was the death and rebirth of The Weeknd. “False Alarm” confirmed that the new Weeknd is here to stay.
